You take a cup of boiling water and throw it in the air; the extreme temperature difference causes it to to turn to "snow" and then you end up with a whole lot of steam. As soon as he saw this, he wanted to show the boys so we started our activity.

hubby "making" snow - our first attempt |
The next time, we tried adding food colouring to the water, but it didn't show up. It did, however, stain the ground/snow with the green!

our 2nd attempt, with the food colouring - although you can't tell |
It was really neat to see, and the kids had a lot of fun. Just make sure that it is an adult doing it because of the boiling water!
ETA: Also - please make sure you are not doing it on a windy day, and make sure to throw it AWAY from you. I have just been reading lots of people have been burning themselves by throwing it on windy days
That's fun! We were gong to try it since I posted this -- http://www.mapsgirl.ca/2013/01/boiling-water-to-snow.html
ReplyDeletefunny that we both posted about the same thing!

ReplyDeleteOk certainly cold enough here to do this but I've had enough snow in the past two months to hold me over for a while without wanting to make my own ;)
ReplyDeleteI have seen this all over the Internet lately; perfect activity for frigid Saskatchewan weather! Love it! :)
