When Mr. J was a few weeks shy of 6, I took him to the backyard with his brand new bike, no training wheels, and he was off. I held onto him for about 5 seconds, running along and then let go. He didn't look back and he didn't fall. That was all there was to it for him, and he LOVED the freedom.
We had trouble with Mr.K even learning how to pedal his bike with training wheels. Around that time, I was invited to a preview day of Pedalheads. I had never heard of them before, but loaded up Mr. K and his bike into the Jeep and headed out to the event. They got him comfortable pedaling with his bike/training wheels.
The following year, when he was 4.5, he wanted to try without training wheels - just like his big brother. I hoped it would be as easy when the time came for Mr. K - but it wasn't. He wouldn't pedal fast enough to keep the bike upright, and kept falling down. After a few minutes he was extremely frustrated and asked me to put the training wheels back on - so we obliged.
This summer, both the boys will be doing a week long Pedalheads camp. They have the camps in different areas (Kanata – Glen Cairn United Church at 140 AbbeyHill Road; Alta Vista - 2345 Alta Vista Rd; and Nepean - 2221 Elmira Drv). They are geared at teaching kids how to ride their bikes - safely. They start off with classes for young kids (aged 2) using ride on toys, and go all the way up to age 12. Depending on which level your child is in, they may go off site to bike around on trails, and as they get more experienced they will even do some road riding. This summer they will also be introducing a run bike program.
How would your kids like spending a week riding their bikes? Registration is open now. Want more information? David (the manager for Ottawa Pedalheads) will be holding a mini-day preview of the program on April 30th! This is a free event and will run from 10am -3 pm at the Glen Cairn United Church, 140 AbbeyHill Road – Kanata. There will be a prize pack (same as below) to be won by one family that attends. Follow this link to the facebook event to RSVP.
